Based in Vancouver, BC, Brent Comber creates stunningly simple yet contemporary pieces from wood found along the Pacifc Northwest coast. Douglas fir and western red cedar are just two of the wood types that can be found in his collection."Inspired by the paradox of ancient materials and contemporary forms, Brent Comber brings the rugged North West Coast into the urban setting. By remaining true to the spirit of this precious material, his pieces blur the boundaries between form and function.
The drum has been a coveted instrument of pleasure and ceremony as far back as history itself. I am intrigued by the tendency in a piece of this mass to "check" or crack toward the heart as it dries. The check is an anticipated release of tension which interrupts the rhytm of the natural timeline. This elemental form exudes empowerment and innocence.
